Sensory Overload, Attachment, and the Roots of Development
Throughout history, many attempts have been made to explain and understand autism — yet many of these approaches capture only fragments of a much more complex experience. This editorial explores autism through a relationship-based developmental lens, drawing on the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Jule Epp.
Making Sense of Autism
Across history, there have been repeated attempts to make sense of children who appear unreachable, highly sensitive, or developmentally “different.” Early explanations ranged from folklore notions such as “changelings” to mid-20th-century psychological theories, including Kanner’s concept of “selfness” and the harmful “refrigerator mother” hypothesis. Around the same time, Hans Asperger described a link between autistic traits and areas of exceptional ability, offering a more differentiated—though still incomplete—view.
Over time, a wide range of theoretical models has emerged, each contributing important insights into the nature of autism. Yet these approaches often remain fragmented, capturing partial aspects rather than forming a coherent whole.
A Fragmented Picture
Among the most influential contemporary frameworks are:
- Theory of Mind: Proposes that the child struggles to interpret intuitively the intentions of others.
- Executive Function models: Emphasizes difficulties with planning, attention, and self-regulation, often attributed to the functioning of the brain’s prefrontal cortex.
- Mirror neuron hypotheses: Suggests that a failure in the brain’s mirroring mechanism impairs the ability to imitate others and prevents the child from feeling instinctively “linked up” with those around them.
- Social motivation theories: Posits that the brain does not release sufficient endorphins during social exchanges, leaving the individual without the primary biological motivation to engage with others.
- Weak Central Coherence: Describes a strong orientation toward local details and specific patterns, which makes it difficult to grasp the “big picture” or integrative meaning of a situation.
- Empathy-Systematizing Spectrum: frames cognition as a strong bias toward systems, logic, and pattern detection, with comparatively lower spontaneous social-emotional processing.
- Predictive Coding (The Bayesian Brain): Frames the brain as a “prediction machine” operating in a high-precision mode; because it is unable to filter out excess or “extra” sensory input, it cannot form a cohesive model of the world, resulting in a constant state of neurological overload.
Each framework contributes something valuable. Yet none fully resolves the question of how these experiences come together in the lived reality of the child. One way to integrate many of these observations is to consider the role that sensory overload may play across multiple domains of autistic experience.
Understanding from the Inside Out
What many of these models describe from the outside may converge, from the inside, into a much more immediate experience: sensory overload.
From the outside, we tend to see behaviors, deficits, or differences. From the inside, the picture is more elemental. The world does not arrive in manageable fragments, but all at once—intense, unfiltered, and often overwhelming. For many children on the spectrum, experience can resemble a continuous sensory surge: not simply “too much,” but too immediate, too present, too inescapable.
In such a state, the brain shifts from exploration to protection. Behaviors such as crying, withdrawing, or striking out are not random or oppositional; they are urgent attempts to regain a sense of safety in an environment that feels invasive or disorganizing. What we observe as behavior is often the visible edge of an invisible overload.
And yet, this heightened sensitivity is not defined by distress alone. The same openness that allows the world to overwhelm can also allow it to be experienced with unusual vividness and depth. There can be an exquisite attunement to detail—a capacity for absorption, for fascination, for moments of pure sensory delight: the crispness of a sound, the texture of air on the skin, the brightness of a color that others might barely register.
If we begin here—at the level of lived sensory experience—many seemingly separate features of autism start to align. The question then shifts from isolated deficits to a more unifying inquiry: what happens in development when the brain cannot reliably filter, prioritize, and soften incoming experience?
From Trickle to Torrent
Drawing on the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Jule Epp, sensory overload can be understood as a fundamental difference in the brain’s sensory gating system—the neurological filter that protects the thinking brain from being overwhelmed by excessive sensory input.
Sensory processing depends on a coordinated interplay between different brain regions, allowing experience to be shaped into a manageable stream. Under ordinary conditions, most incoming signals are filtered out, leaving only a gentle, prioritized flow for the thinking brain to engage with.
In this sense, the brain does not simply receive the world—it edits it. It dampens what is irrelevant, highlights what matters, and, when needed, softens emotional intensity so that experience can be integrated.
In a hypersensitive brain, however, this filtering process can lose some of its selectivity. The gate does not close as firmly. More of the world enters at once—unfiltered, unranked, and immediate. What would normally be reduced to a quiet background can arrive with equal weight and urgency.
The result is not just “more input,” but a different quality of experience: less like a stream and more like a surge. When too much arrives at once, the brain is left with more than it can easily organize, interpret, or hold together
Autism, Attachment and Maturation
When Orientation Wavers
From a developmental perspective, attachment forms the foundation upon which maturation unfolds. It is the secure ground from which a child learns to explore, connect, and gradually discover their place in the world. A child’s brain is naturally designed to orient toward attachment figures, drawing on senses, sameness, belonging, significance, love, and being known as pathways of safety, guidance, and connection
When sensory experiences become overwhelming, this natural sense of direction may become less reliable. The child may struggle to prioritize human connection when competing sensations, impressions, and experiences demand attention. Like a traveler trying to find a familiar path in a storm, the child may have difficulty settling into the relationship and allowing connection to become a place of comfort and orientation.
When the outside world feels too intense or difficult to organize, the child may begin searching for other ways to create predictability and a sense of direction. Instead of naturally turning toward people, the child may rely more heavily on protective attachment strategies that help make an overwhelming world feel more manageable.
These can include:
Depersonalization:
Human interaction may feel too complex, intense, or difficult to navigate. The child may seek security in objects, routines, or predictable systems — places where expectations feel clearer and the world feels easier to understand.
Defensive alpha dynamics:
A strong need to control, direct, or take charge may emerge as an attempt to create order in a world that feels uncertain. By becoming the one who decides, the child may try to build a sense of structure when orientation feels difficult.
Defensive detachment:
The child may resist closeness, contact, or vulnerability as a way of protecting themselves from experiences that feel too overwhelming. Distance can become a place of refuge when connection feels too demanding.
When Growth Waits
True maturation – becoming a viable, separate, and integrated being – is a spontaneous process that can only fully unfold when the brain has enough capacity and space for growth. For children who experience the world with heightened intensity, this process may require more time, more patience, and more support. Depending on the degree of intensity and the child’s individual circumstances, development may be affected mildly, significantly, or anywhere in between.
When the brain is constantly occupied with managing excessive sensory input, energy that would normally support growth, emotional development, and adaptation may be redirected toward protection and regulation. As a result, some children may experience a degree of developmental “stuckness” — where certain areas of growth progress more slowly or become temporarily harder to access.
Adaptation can also become more difficult. Healthy resilience depends on the ability to experience and process the tears of futility — the sadness that comes from accepting what cannot be changed. When experiences carry overwhelming intensity, this process has to find its way through a storm.
Integration may likewise be affected. Emotional maturity depends on the capacity to feel conflicting feelings simultaneously — for example, feeling frustration and caring at the same time. When emotions are experienced with excessive intensity, they can become much harder to integrate.
Finally, difficulties with filtering sensory input can extend into the emotional domain as well. Just as the brain may struggle to filter out irrelevant sounds or sensations, it may also struggle to digest intense emotional signals. A child can become flooded by internal emotional activation that the thinking brain is not yet able to fully interpret, organize, or manage. Depending on the intensity of these experiences, the impact on development can range from subtle challenges to significant obstacles.
Growth does not disappear when it is delayed or disrupted. However, for some children, the path toward maturation may require considerably more patience, understanding, support, and time. The more intense the experience, the more essential it becomes that the child receives the conditions needed for development to unfold.
Where Rest Returns
When experience comes in too fully, too quickly, too unfiltered, what is needed is not more force, but room made clear — space cleared of pressure and obstruction, so that play may be entered freely, as play, and not as work or necessity.
